THE GAME
The main menu is your friend. You can find everything you need there.
How to play
You can learn how to play by clicking on the 'Help' button.
There are lots of pretty pictures and description of the game in there.
You can find out what keys and buttons do what by clicking on
the 'Configure Controls' button.
You can also watch the demos to learn new strategies.
While playing the game...
Esc Bring Up Menu Screens
Pause Pauses the game
Configuring the controls
Click on the 'Configure Controls' button.
Click on the action you want to configure.
Press the key or button that you want to assign to the action.
Configuring the video
Click on the 'Configure Video'
Adjust the Gama and the Resolution to whatever you want.
When you press 'Done' the resolution will change to whatever you have set.
If you find that the mode you changed to doesn't work, Type ALT-F4 (hold
down the Alt key and press the F4 key).
This is the standard shortcut in Window to exit a program. The game
will realize that you couldn't use the mode and not go back to it the next
time you run the game.

DIRECT X
Swarm requires Microsoft DirectX 2.0 or greater.
The installer will check for DirectX 2.0 or greater
and if not present, either run the DirectX 5.0 installer or give you the web
address where you can find it.
DirectX 5.0 is currently the latest version of Microsoft's DirectX.

PROBLEMS
*** If you run the game and it comes up with a black screen,
it's probable that your video card cannot run in the
currently selected mode.
1. Delete the Swarm.cfg file in the Swarm folder and restart the game.
If you are still gettting a black screen it is most likely that
the DirecX driver for you video card is not functioning properly or
is not a current version. Check with your video card manufacturer
(or your video card manufacturer's webpage) for the latest drivers.
*** If you find your ship flying uncontrollably,
or if your joystick is not working...
Your joystick is not properly setup in windows. To set it up...
1. Double click on 'My Computer'
2. Double click on 'Control Panel'
3. Double click on 'Joystick' (or 'Game Controllers')
4. Set 'Joystick selection' to the joystick you have connected or to (none).
5. Click on 'Calibrate' and follow the directions.
6. Click on 'OK'
Your ship should no longer be uncontrollable, and your joystick should be working.
*** Improving Performance on slower machines.
Each of these will speed up the game. If you experience choppy or slow
game play, it's recommended that you try them in order and only do as
many as are required to make the game perform acceptably.
1. From the 'Configure Video' dialog change your resolution (making
it smaller will make the game run faster).
2. From the 'Configure Video' dialog set 'Anti-Aliasing' to 'Faster'.
Anti-Aliasing makes the edges of the art look better but is slightly slower.
3. From the 'Configure Sound' dialog, turn 'Stereo' to 'Mono'.
4. From the 'Configure Sound' dialog, turn 'Mixing' to 'Faster'.
5. From the 'Configure Sound' dialog, turn the music volume all the
way down. This will stop the music from streaming.
6. From the 'Configure Sound' dialog, turn the Master sound volume all the
way down. This will avoid the overhead of mixing and playing all sounds.
*** Soundcard problems
Many older soundcards aren't fully compatible with Microsoft DirectX.
Usually, simply updating your soundcard drivers will fix any strange sound
problems you may encounter. Check with your manufacturer (or your soundcard
manufacturer's webpage) for the latest drivers.
*** Configuration problems
If you need to reset the original Swarm configuration, you can delete the
Swarm.cfg file. This will reset video mode, sound levels, and controls.
*** The screen is too dark
You can adjust the gamma correction levels from the 'Configure Video' menu.
*** Lockup or crashing problems
If you experience any lockups or crashes, make sure the you have the latest
DirectX divers for your video and audio hardware. Most problems can be fixed by
installing DirectX 5 but some manufactures have newer divers then those included
with DirectX 5. Be sure to contact the specific manufacture for your hardware for the
latest drivers. Also be sure to reboot your computer before playing after a crash.
Often times, without a reboot, the problem may lie in memory and will occur again.
